Tevana Journal is run by Tevana Technique. This page says what we keep, where it goes, and what you can do about it โ in plain words, because a journal is the last place for fine print.
The short version. We store your journal so you can reach it from any device. Nothing you write is sent to an AI until you choose one in Settings, and you choose which. We do not sell your data, show you ads, or use your journal to train anything. You can export your writing to plain text files whenever you like.
What we keep
- Your account: your email address and a password (stored only as a hash by our sign-in provider).
- Your journal: entries, moments and their frequency readings, titles, tags, reflections, and reviews.
- Your media: photos, videos and voice recordings you add. For photos we keep the time they were taken. We keep a photo's GPS location only if you turn that on in Settings; it is off unless you do.
- Your Human Design details, if you enter them: birth date, time and place, and the chart calculated from them.
- Documents you import as personal context, and your conversations in Ask. Conversations are kept apart from your entries so an AI's words are never mistaken for yours.
- Summaries an AI writes for you, such as day recaps, if you have chosen a model.
- Oura data, if you connect a ring: sleep and readiness scores, bedtimes, heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, activity, and workouts. See below.
Where it lives
Your journal and files are stored with Supabase, our database and file host. The app itself runs on Vercel. Background work โ like writing a day recap after you save โ runs on Trigger.dev. Each of them handles your data only to run the service for you.
To be precise about it: we hold the record, and people who run this service can technically access it. We do not read your journal, and we only look at stored data when you ask us to help with a problem, and then only what the problem needs.
When AI reads your journal
New accounts start on Private AI. You can switch to another model, or to No AI, in Settings at any time; with No AI, nothing you write is sent to a language model. (Voice recordings are a separate setting, below.) The choices are:
- Private AI, by Privatemode. Open models run inside sealed hardware whose software is checked before anything is sent. The parts of your journal a feature needs are encrypted from our server to that hardware, so Privatemode, its cloud host and the model makers cannot read them, keep them, or train on them. Privatemode keeps request records โ such as the time and how much was used โ for up to 90 days, and a running count of usage per account permanently, but never the content. See how Privatemode works.
- A model running on your own computer, with Ollama. The model that reads your entries runs on your machine, so nothing is sent to an AI company.
- An open model hosted by Groq. The parts of your journal a feature needs are sent to Groq's servers to generate a response; Groq says this data is not used to train models. See Groq's data policy.
- Claude, by Anthropic. The parts of your journal a feature needs are sent to Anthropic to generate a response. Anthropic's commercial terms say this data is not used to train their models; see Anthropic's privacy center.
- A model you run or choose yourself, at an address you enter. Your journal goes wherever you point it, under that service's terms.
No AI reads what you write at the moment you write it. Models are used for summaries, reviews, and questions you ask.
Voice and video transcription
When you record, the audio is sent to be turned into text. Unless you choose otherwise, that is Private AI: Whisper runs inside Privatemode's sealed, checked hardware, so Privatemode cannot hear the recording, keep it, or train on it. In Settings you can choose Groq instead, which receives the audio to transcribe it, or โ on a Mac set up for it โ transcription on your own computer. A recording is more than words: it is your voice, and anyone else audible in the room.
Other services, only when you use them
- OpenStreetMap: when you enter a birthplace, the place name is looked up to find its coordinates and timezone.
- Notion: if you import from Notion, we read the pages you give us access to, using the key you provide.
- Oura: see the next section.
Oura
If you connect an Oura ring, we ask Oura for two kinds of access โ daily summaries and workouts โ and nothing else: not your email, not your profile, not your raw heart-rate stream. We fetch that data every couple of hours and keep it in your account beside your journal, so it can sit next to your frequency. No AI model reads your Oura data. The keys Oura gives us are stored where neither your browser nor the rest of the app can read them.
You can disconnect in Settings at any time, and choose whether to keep or delete what was already fetched. To revoke access on Oura's side as well, remove Tevana in the Oura app.
Cookies
Two small ones: the cookie that keeps you signed in, and one that remembers whether your sidebar is open. No analytics, no advertising, no tracking pixels.
Your data is yours
- Export: Settings โ Your Data downloads every journal entry and your profile as plain markdown files, readable in any text editor, with or without us. Photos, videos, imported documents and Ask conversations are not in the export yet; email us and we will send them.
- Delete: email barrett@tevanatechnique.com and we will delete your account, your journal, and your uploaded files. There is not yet a button for this in the app; until there is, we do it by hand, and we will confirm when it is done.
- Backups: we do not yet keep separate backups of the database. That is a real limit, and the reason exporting now and then is a good habit.
What this is not for
Tevana is for noticing patterns over time. It is not a crisis service, and nothing in it is watched in real time. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, please contact emergency services or, in the US, call or text 988. See our terms for more on this.
Who can use it
Tevana is for adults, 18 and over.
Changes
If we change where your data goes or what we keep, we will update this page and tell you in the app before the change takes effect.
